The area walleye bite has had some very good times and also some very slow times. Pitching plastics or jigs and minnows has been best but water can also be better covered and fish put in the boat by trolling crank baits. However, if you choose to troll, keep a close eye on your boat speed.
Water temperatures are hovering between 47 - 52 degrees F, so focus on 1.1 - 1.5 mph for now but be prepared to go below 1.0 mph soon. Also, if you're looking for a change of scenery from the area lakes, don't forget about our many river systems and the opportunities for shore fishing. It's about time for the moving water to really shine! Crappie fishing has been fairly steady through this fall transition but the fish are still a bit scattered. However, when you do locate a school of fish, it's generally quite populated, so have fun!
Trolling crank baits continues to work but most crappies are being taken on small tube jigs or twister tails. Tipping the tube jig with a small minnow or leech has helped entice the fish into biting too. The bluegills are just 'steady Eddie' this open water season. They are still being found in 4 - 15' of water, almost exclusively over a rock or gravel bottom with mud close by but there are also some fish being found right under the surface over 20+' of water. If it's quality over quantity you're after with the 'gills, focus on the fish just under the water's surface over deep water. For the 'gills, hair jigs under a float have been best but don't forget about beetle spins or blade baits.
